My MIL dropped this on me yesterday
Now this is a VERY new one for me. I've never ever heard of it in all my life. I was hanging the laundry when MIL popped out of nowhere suddenly and dropped this on me. She said, "My MIL said not to wearing horizontal striped clothing when pregnant". And walked away...
SWhat does that mean? A statement? An order? No explanation. NOTHING. She didnt say it woh, HER MIL (hubby's granny, dead liao, cannot verify statement) said one woh.... You see, I was wearing a horizontal striped maternity tee. A nice hand-me-down from my best friend then. The better part of me kept quiet and ignored it. Too me it's utter bullshit.
Anyone ever heard of this one before? I know there are many old wives tales when it comes to superstitions and taboos during pregnancy. But this one ahh.... I'd better go give my mom a call and see what she has to say regarding this pregnancy no-no.

I oso never heard before. But tell your MIL hor, when pregnant you aren't suppose to hang laundry so ask her to do it for you lor. LOL.
You're probably right; it's 'utter bullshit' and means nothing to wear a horizontal-striped tee (or any other pattern) during your pregnancy. But if it helps preserve the good relationship between you and your MIL, then there's no harm in not wearing it for the next 3 months. There's a saying: you can win a battle and lose a war. Unless MIL has a negative comment on every other baju you wear, I would suggest it's best to avoid any confict with her. It's okay.
LOL..good one lilian!!!
No, Samm. I havent heard of the horizontal stripe thingy also.
Hmmm, but I am sure you can wear horizontal and vertical stripes together when we go makan makan... I have nothing against stripes.
5xmom - I've heard this "do not lift hands up to take things from highup places" from her and quite a few friends before also. So, ur suggestion also valid one. Yalor, like i've got someone else to do my laundry :p. But if i need to take something urgently, call hubby back from where he is meh, hoh.
fishtail - Oh, my MIL has plenty of comments just waiting for the right time to be dropped down on me. But, after years of living together in the same house, i know damn well how to deal with them already. Thx for ur suggestion. Maybe i stick to wearing my Nike bratops around the house lah.
King's wife - have you got any funny or weird ones to share?
LB - Sei lor, then ppl will have trouble with their eyes liao. But then hoh, me so damn skinny, only looks somewhat better in horizontal stripes wohhhhhhhhh. Vertical...... no-no.
i agree with fishtail.
although its mambo jumbo, but if by not wearing it can make the MIL pleased then THAT reason itself is good enuff for me to not wear it lo. :>
fashionasia - i hardly ever wear that tee neway. I dug it out from the bottom of my wardrobe a few days back. If like that ah, next time when i see her wearing something that makes me wanna puke, i shud tell her not to wear it until Malcolm's delivered, no? *evil thought*
Never heard of it. Must ask my MIL's MIL as well :) Problem with those from that school of thoughts is that there are so many of these tales that they contradict!!
I had my share of such nonsense being blown into my ear when my daughter was born "less than normal" then. The things I had to endure then. sighs.
Ipoh Mali Jugak - My MIL sometimes also doubt her own comments, lol. She'll ask me whether this/that holds true or not. But, we get a long fine nowadays.
I've only heard that wearing horizontal lines make you look wider.....don't tell me your MIL is giving your fashion tip? But really, I never heard that before.
