Various ways Gordon learns his ABCs and 123s

I've been teaching Gordon his ABCs and 123s. Actually, it's hilarious listening to his pronunciation of the letters and numbers. He can recognise all 26 letters of the alphabet and 1 to 10 now.

I teach him in a number of ways. He listen to ABC tape in the car. At home in the bedroom, i'll run Sesame Street's vcds for him. If the tv's not turned on, he'll be reading his favorite books. Sometimes, during bedtime, when the lights are out, i'll whisk out my handphone. I've snapped pictures of some ABC and 123 flashcards into my phone's memory card. Gordon enjoys looking at them in the dark and feels very proud of himself when he finishes going through them.

He loves learning with the Doodle Pro which i bought for him last year. But, sometimes, he bugs the hell out of me when he keeps climbing up with it onto my chair and wants me to write the ABCs and 123s on it for him to read. He wont give up until i do it about 5 times in a row.

If he's not pushing the Doodle Pro onto my lap, he'll want to read them on the computer screen as i did a simple ABC Powerpoint Presentation for him. I also have some ABC and 123 magnets stashed somewhere inside one of my drawers. But then i havent had the time to dig them out yet. When i do find them, i'll get him to pick out the letters and numbers as i name them. I think he'll like that.

During outings, Gordon will sometimes turn to me and try to tell me that he can recognise the letter B on the signboard or the number 4 on the car number plate. His face will light up when i clap my hands and tell him that he's correct and a clever boy. At first, it takes a while trying to understand what he wants that i wonder if he's doing the teaching or me. So, it's true that learning is really a two-way process. Well, i'm happy seeing the progress that he's made so far.

Mommies reading this now, care to share with me and other readers, ways you teach your child his/her ABCs and 123s?

Mine is still too young..
She still cannot link alphabets to words, and numbers yet.
I bought her Baby Einstein series to watch.. that will teach her numbers. And I got her lots of books on ABC..

She knows how to say the numbers 1 to 10, but not necessarily in sequence.. So I guess she's not ready as yet.

I am going through the same agony. A whole new world with alphabets and numbers and now, every KNNMCB signboard, car number plate, even the AWAS word on the road also I have to kena 'What's this epahbet?' He is playing the teacher, I am the student. Actually, it is good that we are not the kiasu moms who train their babies to read from birth and proudly tell the world, my baby recognise all the alphabets by 8 months old. Tiu, I can't stand those mothers. They better don't come near me. I can tell you that in another few months, you are going to spell every damn word for Gordon instead of the other way round. *evil grins*

Zara's mama - Yes, they learn really fast just by watching and observing. But the only thing is that they'll somehow pick up funny accents thru those programs. Mine reads his ABCs with both American And British accents.... haih. But, soon.... it'll turn into Manglish, haha.

And letting her play and read with books is a good way to encourage her to love reading materials.

5xmom - OMG!!! He'll really ask me to spell out all those words????? So, that's what your toddler does to you most of the time, i guess. Kiasu mom or not, i cant be bothered with them, and i'm not in that club. He'll learn when he's ready. Moreover, it's only 26 letters and 10 numbers. They wont ever learn more even if i start them in-vitro, lol. Maybe for kicks, i'll teach Gordon all the Jap Hiragana and Katakana characters, haha. I can still remember how to read and write every single one of them.... dont let them go to waste lorr, hoh. Not many mah, about 200+ only, kekekeke.

I'm not a mum yet but I know my cousin brother who could read A-Z when he was 2. The mum will let him watch educational cds. Besides that, the mum have the letters written on card boards and paste them on the walls. One important thing is never let the child get bored of what he/she is doing. My cousin was a fast learner last time but now,he slacked a bit.One of the reason might be the mum pushing him too hard to learn new things
