House broken into

Whilst many were still sleeping soundly in the wee hours of the morning, something else happened. My sis' house was broken into at 4am, on 1st September.

We read about this a lot in the newspaper, and most of the time, never thought that it may happen to us; or even someone close to us. Luckily for her, the burglar alarm went off as the thief tried to pry open the rear door leading into the kitchen. He even managed to remove two reinforcement bars whilst fumbling around for the latch. One can only imagine what could have happened should the thief managed to get in.

My sis is still recuperating after her surgery. And that was about 10 days prior to the break-in. All the running up and down must have taken a toll on her weakened body. Poor thing.

Many of us overlook the importance of installing an alarm system when renovating their new house, even a basic one would suffice. Well, if one has the dough, they can go for the higher ranged ones which comes with cctv and other goodies. Dont spend everything on unnecessary extensions, electrical appliances, furniture and additional carpentry work. Instead, make sure your new house is safe BEFORE you move in. Most break-ins happen to new houses. When all the excitement is still high and defences low.

Install grilles on front doors and windows but make absolutely sure that you keep the keys in a very accessible place in case of fire. You do not want to be caged in should a fire break out. Write down a list of all emergency numbers and teach your children (that's if they are big enough to understand and learn instructions like this) how to make an emergency call should anything happen.

Both my MIL and SIL were mugged once. Luckily both of them were unharmed. But can we be sure that it's only money or jewellery that they want? Those lunatics are getting bolder everyday. Remember the Canny Ong case. Isnt it horrifying that she had her life taken away at such a young age and in such a manner too.

It's better to be safe than sorry later. So, what are you waiting for. Go check around your house. And dont forget to check your roof too. Install the best alarm system that you can afford for your house. You have that for your car, right. Some with immobilizer too; and they dont come cheap eh. Dont your house deserve better? Moreover, it's your life and your family at stake.

Here in Norway there is a lot of brake-ins. Most of my valuable things is in a safe in the bank.

heyya,

thanx for blogrolling me :-)

yeah, it's weird how so many people build / renovate houses that are so fancy-schmancy yet neglect to make sure they are safe within it!

Glad all was ok for your sis!
